A New Interview with Project Runway Season 11 Champion, Michelle Lesniak Franklin
Novelist Kendra L. Saunders chats with Project Runway Season 11 winner Michelle Lesniak Franklin about the ongoing lone wolf theme in her life, great earrings, 80s hair metal, steampunk, and who she’d take with her to a desert island.
Here’s a short transcript of part of the interview, but make sure to listen in for all of the rest!
Q: As a woman I was especially touched that you chose an inspiration that I don’t see a lot of females draw from- a lone wolf. Have you always felt like a lone wolf?
A: I haven’t. You know, it was being on the show and going through what I was going through that made me feel that way. I came from an artist background, I went to school for fine arts and you come to making a project or making art or a thesis with a theme- and my theme was really how I was feeling. When I go into fashion, it’s really about my emotion.
Q: I noticed you used that color that you have in your kitchen, in your final collection. Has that color been with you a long time?
A: You know… chartreuse and green… I’m from the Pacific Northwest so I take a lot of my inspiration from nature, and green is a huge part of it. And I was born in the '70s so these '70s color palettes are really important to me. It’s really grungy; it’s really dirty and haunting, so yeah, it’s definitely my color palette.
Q: You have some of the most fabulous earrings of anyone I’ve ever seen. Do you make a lot of your own accessories too or do you just find really great things?
A: I make a lot of them. I’m really into natural elements- wood, bone. Some of them I made and some of them are made by local artists here in Portland. I really like to support what’s happening in Portland, so I buy a lot of local.
Thank you Kendra!
BPR Interview with Miranda Kay Levy
A highlight:
"I think the judges knew which designs were mine, except maybe the Glamping challenge. I stayed true to my aesthetic and style lines and I don't think I was trying to fool the judges.
I wanted my designs to represent me and to become a part of my portfolio.
I think other designers might have tried to do some different things and to mix things up a little more. I wanted each of my designs to look like me."

Tim Gunn - "Women Shoppers Come in All Shapes.."
The "Real Woman" challenge on Project Runway each season highlights the dismay that many designers feel about dressing anyone other than a professional model.
Tim Gunn addresses the issue:
The challenge, said the former Parsons professor, is not simply to make clothes bigger, but to rethink the entire design process. "It's not a matter of sizing up or sizing down from a size six," he said, "It's a matter of reconceiving things altogether. There are just some things that you can't or shouldn't do [design-wise]."

BPR Interview with Sue Waller
Project Runway Season 12 designer, Sue Waller, talks about her experience on the show.
A highlight:
BPR: Your designs are fabulous and very distinctive. Is this the first time you auditioned for the show?
SW: Yes. I was a bit insane to have gotten in like I did because I kind of decided last minute to try out. I hopped into a taxi and grabbed everything that I had left after I was robbed a few months ago...I was mugged and had everything stolen from me in the street....I showed up about 12 minutes before the end of the auditions.
All of the other designers were waiting with their rolling racks and they had already been through some initial screenings. Some of the girls said that they really liked my designs. I don't have a lot of interaction with other designers. I have been living and working in the south of France - very isolated - so I really appreciated that.
Anyway, after we met the judges and had our interviews, at one point, someone said, "Sue, number 80, you are moving forward. The rest of you, thank you very much." I realized that some of them had tried out 3, 4, 5, or even 10 times. Some had created collections just for the casting.. I was very shocked that I was selected.
I realize that I did not fit into the usual mold. I was pretty much in the dark about what the show was about and how it worked.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson Conference Call Highlights

Jesse generously participated in a conference call this morning with journalists. Here are some highlights:
Q. As a Project Runway fan, is there a Project Runway designer from this season or past seasons that you would like to collaborate with on a bow tie design?
A. As a matter of fact, we did collaborate with Patricia Michaels on a bow tie design. True to form, there are a lot of details in her design and it was a challenge to our production to meet Patricia's standards. This tie will be available in September.
Q. What is the favorite tie that you have ever worn?
A. Viktor Luna has become a friend of mine. He wore a feathered bow tie on Project Runway and I adored it. When I met him, I mentioned that I was obsessed with it. Several weeks later, I received one from him in the mail. I have worn it a couple of times. It means so much that he made it for me.
