Project Runway Season 2 Designer, Daniel Vosovic, Enters CFDA Incubator

Daniel Vosovic talks about Project Runway and his new opportunity to join the CFDA Incubator program.
A highlight:
Can you walk us through what happened between Project Runway and now?
I was on the show four days after college, so it was my first real job ... When it came time that the show was done, that the dust had settled, I knew that I had to make a decision and try to use the exposure to jump into something — even though I knew I wasn't ready — and maybe just try and spin it into something positive. But I felt like that had a very short shelf life, so I made a very conscious decision to take a step back and say, You still have to learn about this, you still have to really develop this part of design and part of your business. So that's what I started to do. I went back into the grind, which was very weird to go into interviews when people had seen me on the TV show, but I jumped from big companies to small companies, some creative director positions, some very lowly assistant positions, and I did that for four and a half years. And all behind the scenes, I started to build up my infrastructure. So before I even had my company, before it officially launched, I had my legal team and a financial team and a proper business plan.

Daniel himself gives off an open, easygoing, infectiously friendly energy – not to say he isn’t deadly serious when it comes to his work. Take fall 2012, which was inspired by his teen years in mid-’90s Grand Rapids. “I found all these old photos in the attic while visiting my parents last year, and that just sort of kickstarted everything.”

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in fashion?
You must LOVE to work; working in most creative fields consists of 90% behind-the-scenes work and 10% fun and glamour. Also, educate yourself in all facets of the fashion industry, not just the “marquee” positions like head designer and stylist (made main-stream famous in the past five years) as there are literally hundreds of people that go into getting fashion made. We’d be nowhere without textile designers, knitwear designers, trim specialists, photographers, model agents, casting agents, makeup artists, production managers, patternmakers, seamstresses, cutters, editors, web developers and on, and on, and on.

A highlight: Finally, a good wallet is "very important," Mr. Siriano says. "It drives me crazy when a man looks good, and then he's paying and pulls out this old army-green wallet with Velcro that he bought 15 years ago when he was in high school," he says. "It's like, grow up, have a nice, tailored wallet."

“I try to follow Alber Elbaz’s perspective on women and perspective on how he treats people. There’s such a level of respect for women and for design in general. And whenever he gives interviews, I’m still starstruck. I’m still shocked…I love that someone who’s so emotional and brings such a beautiful, sensitive quality to the fashion industry is still so successful. It helps ground me in my process and in how I interact with people…I don’t know him at all, and I hope that he’s the same person in real life that he is in the public view.”
