Project Runway's Zac Posen on Season 12

Project Runway judge, Zac Posen, graciously participated in a conference call yesterday and answered our questions about the new season.

Here are some highlights:

Q: I wanted to know what you think of the new opportunities on Project Runway this season, especially the Tim Gunn rescue?

Zac Posen: I always value mentors and educators to the highest regard. I’ve had incredible teachers and mentors throughout my career and through my schooling and often your mentor becomes a form of your collaborator and your guide.

I wanted to get behind the scenes with every episode but that’s not my place in the show. So, I think it’s wonderful that Tim has the ability when he sees something, from the behind the scenes, which we’re not aware of when we’re judging, to be able once in the season to make that call. He’s an invaluable resource to the show and to designers. I also really enjoy the new change of being able to see the clothing up close, and being able to have that dialogue with Tim.

For me creativity is much about process as it is about results.

BPR Interview with Kahindo Mateene

Project Runway Season 12 designer, Kahindo Mateene talks about her experience on the show.

A highlight:

BPR:  You used green tulle to mitigate the strength of your print.  Do you think that was a good idea?

KM:  The green tulle was originally supposed to be used at the bottom of the dress.  After talking to Tim,  I made the change.   Of course I know now that the judges hated the print, which I don't understand, so even if I stuck with my original design, it probably wouldn't have helped.

BPR:  What are you working on now?

KM:  I am working on my seventh collection which is for Spring/Summer 2014 which I will be showing in New York in September.  I also have just launched my online store.  I am also working on a Kickstarter program which will be helping to provide jobs to women in Congo.

Tim Gunn Ready for Season 12

Jay McCarroll Dishes on Life After Winning Season 1 of Project Runway

Jay is always doing something fun!

After winning the first season (and famously turning down the prize money) Jay has presented at Fashion Week, sold a collection on QVC, designed several lines of fabric, socks, handbags, and clothing.  He was the ultimate winner of VH-1's Celebrity Fit Club.  He has been a fashion instructor, the subject of a documentary and is now a Mall Ambassador - and I'm sure I'm leaving plenty out.

As we prepare for the premiere of season 12, let's have a look at the original....

Conference Call With Tim Gunn

Here are some highlights of Tim's conference call this morning:

Please tell us about the new interactive features for season 12.

Viewers will be able to provide immediate feedback online.

(Join Playrunway.com each Thursday night beginning at 9:00 EST to join the interactive fun. )

What else is new for season 12?

I come out with the models after the runway show and the Q & A and stand before the judges so that they can examine the garments more closely.  I am also able to provide information to the judges about what happened in the workroom.

For instance, in the case of one of the top garments, the judges found pins in it and therefore the garment did not win.  I was able to go back to the workroom and tell the designer what had happened and EVERYONE heard it.  Afterward they were paying much closer attention to the finishing and the details.

BPR Interview with Tim Gunn: What's New in Season 12?

Tim graciously joined our family for breakfast yesterday as we wrapped up a vacation in NYC.

Of course, my first question was about the Project Runway Season 12 promotional poster.

I wondered who came up with the concept and especially, "What is the message?" that it sends.

BPR:  Tim, right off the bat, I have to ask you about the poster...

TG:  Did you hear that it is banned in LA?

BPR:  Yes!

TG:  Have you actually seen the poster?

BPR:  Only online, I haven't seen it up on a billboard or bus stop anywhere.  Have you?

TG:  No.  I haven't seen it anywhere.

BPR:  Well it is certainly getting a lot of attention.

TG:  And I think that was the intent - to be provocative.

BPR:  Whose idea was this?  Heidi's?

TG:  Lifetime.

BPR: ....and what is the message?

TG:  It is quasi-allegorical.  Heidi is a Marie Antoinette character...

BPR:  And what about you?

TG:  Well, originally they wanted me to dress up like Louis XVI.  They wanted to paint my nails black and put kohl around my eyes - sort of like a french vampire.  But honestly I had thirty minutes and there just wasn't enough time.  The photographer's studio was about a 30-minute drive from the set and I had a schedule to keep.

BPR:  Were the models actually there with you or were they added later?

TG:  Oh they were there, they were all there ready to go, and finally we decided that I would just wear the suit and Heidi was on her throne and the photographer was moving the models - a little this way, to the left, to the right, higher, lower, adjusting the lights and it was just ridiculous.

Finally someone suggested that they just get the photo with the stage and Heidi and I and add the models later - so that is what they finally did.  So, yes, in the end it was photoshopped!
