Amanda's Take - Season 6 - Episode 2

I have worked with Monique Lhuillier many times and was so happy she filled in for Michael Kors on this episode! She is a wonderful Mom and always talks about her little boy, Jack!

One thing you can really see on the runway is that how a model feels in her clothes directly reflects how she will walk in them for the judges. Even if it may not be the best look of the episode, if SHE likes it, she will make it look good. There aren't any models this season that are disastrous. Thank goodness! See? Offer the models a prize at the end that involves money and see who wants to participate NOW!

Here is a highlight:

LAC: So season six is in LA, season seven is in New York, and season eight will be back in LA?
HK: Right. The great thing about shooting in LA is that we get more big-time celebrities on the show. Our designers get so hyped up when we bring out these international superstars.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Despite being eliminated first, are you happy with your experience on Project Runway? Would you do it again?
A. Ari: I genuinely enjoyed being eliminated first and wouldn't have had it any other way. The only way they could get me back on that show is if they promised to get me out of there first, again.

More from Tim Gunn in USA Weekend

Click here for the full interview.

Here is a highlight:

WHAT TIM GUNN TAUGHT ME

Christian Siriano (winner, Season 4): "I had confidence, but he showed me how to be a little more humble in my work. He never said, 'I don't think it should be that.' It was always, 'It could be something else.' It was always about what you could do to make it better."

Chloe Dao (winner, Season 2): "What I got just by being around him is his level of generosity and how grounded he is."

Nick Verreos (contestant, Season 2): "To try to conduct yourself with class and decency. And to be upfront with people, but not to be so personal in terms of getting into people's characters."

Christopher Straub (contestant, Season 6): "He told me to work on my design -- don't work on someone else's, don't try to please someone else -- work on your own. It's one of the most important things I've ever been told: 'You need to find what your identity is and focus there.' "

Andrae Gonzalo (contestant, Season 2): "It's always important to ask questions instead of making judgments."

Congratulations, Shirin

As Diane von Furstenburg pointed out last week, a career can be built upon a single look and your frock this week for an expectant mother is just such a garment. There is a HUGE market out there for chic mommy-to-be outfits and, without ever having been pregnant, you instinctually keyed into the features that they want. The flattering belly detailing will look pretty at 5 months or 9 and counting. The lovely neck draping draws the eye up to the glowing face but doesn't detract from the fuller bust. Our readers worried that you were being overly ambitious with the coat but you demonstrated that in your skillful hands the additional piece would elevate this to a win. All of the judges this week would have bought this dress. Well conceived, well executed and well done!

This post is only for positive words for Shirin Askari. If you have negative commentary or something to say about another designer, you can do so in our Reactions post here.

BPR Love for Malvin Vien

Project Runway has a long history of sweet, conceptual thinkers from Austin Scarlett to Diana Eng to Elisa Jimenez. All of those designers were fascinating to watch bring their concepts to fruition and you join those ranks. The idea of a fertility goddess or of highlighting something precious with an egg-like fragility in theory sounds intriguing. As Nina Garcia pointed out, you had something with the feather detailing. Viktor & Rolf and Alexander McQueen demonstrate that there is an interest in artistic concept in fashion and you will surely find your niche and the client that will demand your brand of expression. Your Facebook update last night (Status: "eating fried chicken...want a leg?") shows that you have a delicious sense of humor that will serve you well in the industry. We only hope that you keep us updated because we know you have so much more to offer.

This post is only for positive words for Malvin Vien. If you have negative commentary or something to say about another designer, you may do so in our Reactions post here.

Reactions To Episode 2

Photo: Mike Yarish Lifetime Networks

So did Project Runway deliver what you were expecting? Post your reactions to Episode 2 here.

We are going to try out a new Reactions post feature. We are going to be looking at the comments this week to determine our favorite for each garment; you could see your reaction on the BPR Judging page on MyLifetime.com. We are interested in your sound bite; longer comments will be edited by the folks at Lifetime to fit our allocated space so a phrase or short sentence will work best. Only comments posted prior to noon EDT on Friday the 28th will be considered. But don't hesitate to write your reactions regardless of the length - we love to read what you have to say!

A Note From Sweet P

Hi BPR,

I want to say I did love doing the All-Star Challenge, but was not happy about the way it was edited. I think that we came there with a mutual respect for each other and because there was no real drama they chose to edit it as if there were.

I don't want to get too philosophical, but I guess they subscribe to the thought that people don't want too watch something positive... For crying out loud Project Runway is not Tila Tequila so just let it be real. I prefer to watch shows like Top Chef Masters, no bull, no backstabbing but real mutual respect, kindness and great talent. That is where I see a big difference in the production.

We were all friendly, especially us girls. We love each other but they chose to edit it in a way where it looks as though Uli & I are not at all friendly. We were laughing about how we like the same things. As you can see our stuff came out totally different. I love mine and I love hers.

I don't want to say who should have won or not won. I think it is subjective. I think we all did our thing and they all have merit. We had so much fun. Of course Santino made all of us laugh so much.

I had such a great time and felt very confident the entire time. I finished on time for once even though I still chose hard-to-sew fabrics (I said I wouldn't make that mistake.) I still love my collection and feel it is very wearable, sellable and I can definitely see Nicole Kidman in my red carpet dress(great color for her.)

I also want to say it sucks to read when people rip us to shreds. ANY OF US! That is one reason I don't look at blog comments anymore. I can't stand the nameless, faceless cowards who stand in judgment of people who are actually doing something. I guess they never heard "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." It is funny how not one person has ever come up to me and said those things.

With that being said I know people have favorites etc, but really some of the name calling and cheap shots are so unkind.

I would suggest meditation.

Love,
Sweet P

Dear Laura,

Thanks for your phone call.

Chris March’s lawsuit is not against Beyonce, but rather against Thierry Mugler and Tancrede Prinz LLC, who owe Chris money for having designed and fitted Beyonce’s costumes. Beyonce paid them, but they in turn have not paid Chris.

Fearless Predictions for Episode Two

Click here for the Fearless Predictions of Alan Gratz.

A Note From Uli Herzner

Hi Laura and BPR,

I absolutely loved to be on the All-Star Challenge. Especially meeting designers from other seasons. Sweet P and Korto are supernice and talented and I am so happy to get to know them. We became really good friends.

We did not like that the editing of the show made us look like enemies...life is too short to waste time and energy in confrontations and fights. There was so much love, fun and respect in the workroom this time around....we all respected each other ....but it's a tv show ... so the producers had to create drama for the viewer...I guess.

The challenge .. I thought was the best ever !!!! We all had a chance to show "how we have evolved and what we are up to now." ... I guess I must have missed the part where I got a different challenge "to make a printed collection" ....because the fact that I have moved on as well and also grown as a designer....was pretty much dismissed by the judges

What? ..... did they really want me to do the same thing again as 3 years ago? Isn't fashion about creating new things every season?

If they would have criticized the pieces I did ... but no ... they totally ignored my collection .... and were asking for the prints ....which they hated so much the last time around...and Nina saying I lost my spirit .....that's an insult !!!!
I never lost my spirit ....and even if they try very hard ...I will never lose my spirit !!!!!!

I just don't want to be put in a box (in my case, the printed, flowy, hippie...Uli box.)

I am always inspired by ..what I want to wear ....and I don't want to wear the same stuff over and over again. How often can you wear a loud print?....and "hippies" don't really have the money the buy my stuff.

(I am sorry ...my pieces are expensive .... because you need a ton of money to be able to produce in China ...to sell a cheap mass-produced product, and as we all know ...I never won any money to do that)

So, I have to admit ...
I was really devastated and crying my eyes out.
I just did not quite understand ..felt like... getting hit by a truck...
but after a lot of hugs and support from my fellow designers, a glass of wine and a good night sleep....the world looked all bright again the next day.

There are no winners and losers.
I think the producers were looking for another "Christian " ...and they found him in Daniel ..who did a great job ...and is a great representation for an "All-Star winner" and the Project Runway show.
Me...on the other hand..not so much !

I am happy that I was part of the "All-Star Challenge."
I think there are many, talented, young designers out there ...who would kill for that chance, and I really enjoyed the time there...not regretting it ..at all and I will keep moving forward ... in "baby steps"

Life is good !!!
I have my little design company ....making pieces for high-end boutiques and private clients...no pressure ...no one telling me what to do ....all the creative freedom I want (Because I am a free spirit!) and about 2 weeks out of the month I still work as a fashion stylist on photo shoots. I get to spend time with a great group of people and travel to fantastic locations ....and I love it.
I am following my dreams !!!!!!!

thanks for reading this
peace and love
uli

Let’s talk fashion. Have you always been interested in it?

For me, fashion began as an art form, a visceral discourse on the body, wearable, interactive, the body as a canvas.

And lately fashion has become more than an art form, it has become a cause for development, a means through which I have begun to understand my place in our modern context.

A Note from Korto Momolu

Hi BPR

It's been a while since we chatted and I just wanted to say thanks for all the love and support over the last year. It has most definitely been a roller-coaster ride since the show wrapped. Being asked to be on the All-Star Challenge was a treat and it actually was a fun experience for all of us behind the scenes. A lot of the good stuff was edited out and it seems like two hours really wasn't enough to tell the whole crazy story.

I will say that after watching the show and reading the reactions, it's kinda mixed. Some on one hand think I was the winner, some don't. Some think the right person won and others think not. Regardless of the reactions and opinions of the viewers, I really wish that people would put themselves in our shoes. We are just regular people that stepped out on faith and took a chance that this opportunity would bring us the seed money to start our lines. Personally I would give the fame and the drama back for the financing to do what I love - which is to design clothing and accessories that represent and compliment all women.

For so many to get offended in regards to me saying "I should have won" or "I deserved to win" so should I have said "I deserved to lose?..." that's why we all went on the show....

Each designer went to win and get the prize - $100,000! Not one went just for the fun - losing 5 weeks of work, away from our families....

Overall it was a life-changing experience and I will never forget it. I've made some lifetime bonds with some really talented and great people and we will forever be connected. Those people know my heart and they know the real Korto.

So this a memo to all those that watch from the outside looking in....Project Runway is a REALITY show and it seems to me when people are real the audience gets a little rattled. I mean come on...I just left my season - it feels like yesterday .... the emotions were still raw from that - and I took a chance..... a chance that I could come back and try again and see what happens.

What you saw after coming in second again were true raw emotions of what at that time was frustration and disappointment.

I have never taken anything away from Leanne's win (who by the way is a friend and I love her to death). Daniel, is also a friend and I am glad we got a chance to hang out on the All-Stars. I am truly happy for him and proud of all that he has accomplished. We both stood there sweaty palms and all awaiting the verdict...it was bittersweet for him too. As for the other All-stars, (hey guys!!!) we have all gone out and done great things with our careers. We all got along great on the show and had a mutual respect for one another and now that its over.....hooraaaaay! now we can all move on........ for my season 6 designers just stay true to who you are, stand by your work and you'll be just fine. I wish you allllll the luck on the crazy ride ahead.

Thanks to everyone that has stood by me through all this and continues to support me. I still read allll my emails so keep them coming! Check out my website www.kortomomolu.com for all the updates on whats next for me. Do check out the jewelry line on the website and yes check out Dillards in January 2010 for my handbag and jewelry line debut! I will be coming to a city near you to promote it!

Thanks again BPR for giving me a chance to speak and I need that picture of TBone in my seatbelt coat for my scrapbook please!!!

love ya,

korto

While Laura K. favored the dress by Irina Shabayeva, the gown by Ra’Mon-Lawrence Coleman nearly made me swoon with delight. I thought this is the kind of dress that would make Rachel Zoe take notice on the runway, thinking of her clients for awards season. Uma Thurman, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett or Nicole Kidman would all be stunning in this look; those ladies would understand exactly how to use the train for a dramatic effect on the red carpet. With the right Asprey, Fred Leighton or Van Cleef and Arpels gems (which of course the Project Runway designers did not have access to on the accessory wall) this garment would make a glamorous statement on a statuesque screen goddess at the Oscars. BPR Interview with Ari Fish

Ari, how did you arrive at your design - was it fully formed in your mind before you began, or did it evolve as you worked?

Well, I thought about it and I decided what I wanted to construct for the challenge. I try not to sketch, because, one it's a waste of my time, and two, I try to keep things open so as to not lock down a certain idea. The styling evolved after I met Erika, my model.

Did it turn out as you originally envisioned it?

I envisioned it even bigger around her torso, like unbelievably big, and her hair even more huge, but I tamed it down a little, knowing the audience wouldn't get it.

Project Runway Season 6 kicks up the drama this week with Episode 2 titled, "We Expect Fashion." Any speculation?

Irina's gown was my personal favorite as well as the favorite of the crowd at my house. Watching the show a second time, we still wonder why it wasn't in the top three. I can understand why the judges chose Christopher's dress as the winner, but I like this one.

Also note the lovely model, Celine Chua, here. Watch as she very subtly keeps the dress floating along as she walks and then swoops all of that fabric around at the turn...and she's six feet tall. LOVE her. Just for the record.

Amanda's Take - Season 6, Episode 1

I went to a little party for the premiere of PR6 and it was also my friend Lisa Blades' birthday! One of the designers from the show was there too.. Carol Hannah! As soon as I found out she was from South Carolina I had to take a pic because I'm from North Carolina!

Oh, BPRs, how I have missed you!

As excited as I am for this season, it must be noted: the show and promotional advertising and the extra show, Models of the Runway - it is all a little... "overproduced"-feeling. The actual first episode of Project Runway 6, however, was fantastic. I was completely relieved that it was the same format, albeit no panning up and down the dresses during the judging!

Let's get to what you really want to hear from me, opinions on the catwalkers, those runway MODELS!

A Note From Chris March

This was in our comments from Chris March. Given the concern that many of our readers have expressed about him, we felt it was appropriate to give his words a bigger voice:

Hi Everyone--I don't know if it's appropriate for me to comment here, but I would like to say a couple of things about the show:

First, thanks to everyone for your praise of my collection--it is very flattering and means a lot to me! The show had incredibly tough circumstances this time, and I was lucky to get anything done...

About the sleeping...a few things colluded to make me extremely sleepy during the filming.

1) I got approximately 3 hours of sleep a night, less the night before the runway.

2) The first day of filming, I got a bad case of food poisoning at lunch (which they conveniently edited out) that made me very weak and dehydrated.

3) I am diabetic, and on a new medication that makes me very, very sleepy. It just can't be helped.

4) Yes, I have sleep apnea, have been diagnosed and have a CPAP machine. Unfortunately, the other circumstances of participating in the show overwhelmed any sleep I actually got.

5) Then, to top it all off, I went home after the final interview and went to bed, and woke up the next morning with a terrible case of the flu (which I must have been catching during the last days of filming).

PLEASE know that I try to take care of myself (yes, I am painfully aware that I really need to lose weight) and go to the doctor every 3 months to monitor my diabetes. I have made great progress with it since being on Season 4 (I was then insulin dependent, and no longer need it).

Thanks again for all your lovely compliments, and you can visit or email me any time on my website at www.chrismarchdesign.com.

Sincerely,

Chris March

Ra'mon-Lawrence Coleman and Christopher Straub were celebrating last night. Click here for more.

Just about everyone has noted by now that Ari Fish resembles Samantha Ronson... But please, this has nothing to do with the elimination. These judges are professionals!

Congratulations, Christopher

Without formal training you should have been an underdog but in the first episode you demonstrated that instead you were a contender. Our hearts went out to you as you were visibly moved seeing your garment on the runway. You listened to Tim's advise about styling and the results paid off as we focused on all that was good about the frock from the fabric choices to the proportions to the fit. Heidi called your dress, "hip and young" while Michael termed it "cute and edgy" as well as "elegant and sharp." You nailed a red carpet look for young Hollywood or for a music industry diva; who knows what doors this win may open to this talent from Minnesota?

This post is only for positive words for Christopher Straub. If you have negative commentary or something to say about another designer, you can do so in our Reactions post here.

BPR Love for Ari Fish

The first elimination is always tough and this case is no exception. Project Runway has a long history of quirky characters with talent (Elisa Jimenez, Blayne Walsh and Vincent Libretti come to mind) and Ari definitely brought a point of view to the runway to prove that she was a risk-taker right away. You have to admire that she decided to center herself with a handstand rather than stress over an inability to sketch. Her explanation about her concept to Tim was priceless and Tim's reaction to her shopping at Mood (he looked over his glasses at her - you know the look) was adorable. We are more than a little sad that she left us so early in the game; could you imagine Season 4 if the free-spirit Elisa left early (no spit marks!) or Season 5 without the tan goodness of Blayne? (No Tim saying, 'It looks like a pterodactyl at a gay Jurassic Park.") Ari made an impression with our readers before the season even started as she was selected via a poll to be a pre-season favorite at Bryant Park and we suspect she will continue to surprise us in the future with her fashion.

This post is ONLY for positive words for Ari Fish. If you have negative commentary or something to say about another designer, you can do so in our Reactions post here.

Reactions to the Season 6 Premiere

What did you think? Was it worth the long wait? Does it feel like a new network and production team or is this still the familiar show that we know and love?

Which designers stand out as your favorites? Any predictions? Was Lindsay Lohan an effective judge? What was your favorite thing about the episode? Least favorite?

Was there enough Tim Gunn?

Thank you for joining us!

Reactions to the All-Star Challenge

What did you think? Did the All-Star Challenge live up to your expectations? Was it the right balance of drama and talent? Was it fun to see these designers competing again? Did anything disappoint you?

Post your reactions here - thanks everyone!

Edit to add:
Given the reactions to the outcome, we decided to post a poll to this tonight:

Season 6 Premiere Party Post!

Time to resume the party! Thanks for joining us. This is the place to post your running commentary and reactions to what is happening in the premiere.

Meanwhile, Nancy T will be posting the "play-by-play" and you are welcome to join her there as well.

Later, we'll put up the "reactions" post for the premiere episode and of course tomorrow we'll have our "Who should have won?" and "Who should have been eliminated?" polls.

I am hoping that our faithful BPRs will be here for the party and that we will have some new readers as well. Thanks everyone!

YAY!
