A Note From Robert Best

Dear BPR,

While on the show, Laura noticed the trench I had at a photo shoot. She loved it. I told her she could wear it for the run of the show. As it turned out, it looked so great on her - I gave it to her. I can think of no one I'd rather see in my design, than Laura (other than Barbie of course). It is, however the only coat of its kind - except for its miniature counterpart. Here is a sketch of the original and a closeup of the Barbie version.

Hi Laura , no news yet. Please tell Scarlett I am sorry she missed the shower last night, family first- I completely understand.

I'm sure this is really boring in light of Tim's sexy standing, but I have a response to the attention over the white coat.

I love trench coats, to me they are right up there with little black dresses and big sunglasses. When I saw Robert Best with this one at a promotional shoot for Project Runway I was immediately enamored. The border of the coat is silk screened figures drawn by Robert. Each figure is more fabulously glamorous than the next. I believe the coat is a one of a kind sample. He kindly allowed me to wear it during the filming of Project Runway 3. Upon his departure when I tried to return it to him he said I could keep it! It is now one of my prized possessions. It is a wonderful reminder of Robert's talent and generosity.

Tim Gunn - People's Sexiest Men Alive Issue

Readers of BPR know that we've petitioned here to have Tim Gunn named the sexiest man alive. (Thanks ScubaOtter for the idea!) Did People magazine notice?!? Click here to see a video.

He's not the cover (that honor belongs to George Clooney - THIS YEAR), but Tim was obviously photographed for the issue that goes on sale on Friday.

BPR Halloween Contest: Grand Prize Winner

The judges have spoken: marzipan costumes for a Black Forest production of the Nutcracker? Of course! Inspired by a design that Santino Rice barely escaped the runway with, our Grand Prize winner found the perfect venue to make the look "aesthetically pleasing":

Hey Team BPR, My name is Nicole and I'm a 20 year old Graphic Design major at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. [I figure you should know my age since the costume is a tad on the scandalous side...].

I've been a truly dedicated PR fan since episode 1 season 1. I spent all last week thinking about and constructing my costume, trying to get every detail in there. From all the trims to the crazy makeup... I know some colors aren't exact but hopefully it's overwhelmingly obvious what I was going for.

I used my late Nana's model form she used to make clothes on, but since I'm more of a graphic designer than a fashion designer most of the things are glued. Everything you see was done by me [except for an old bra and underwear set, which I built the costume on] but other than that the whole costume, hair, makeup, and photography was done by me.

Andrae: I just loved this one. Team Lingerie. It survived on the show for it's original point of view, and this BPR reader gets my vote here for the same reason. For me, this is what Project Runway is all about: giving people a forum to be creative, and standing back to marvel at what they come up with. It's all too easy to get your girlfriend to write "Detroit" on your neck with a sharpie. How many of you know where to find red 1/4" pompoms by the yard in your home town? Good Job.

Nick: Accurate styling, design and make-up! Instantly recognizable to the "inner circle" of die-hard Project Runway fan! Did she bid on Emmett's design and then wore it? Inquiring minds want to know.

Emmett: Congratulations to Nicole, Winner of the BPR Halloween contest, and the other winners, you are all IN!
I am partial to the winning creation as Nicole followed all the precise construction techniques in assembling it as I did in the original outfit per Santino's explicit design direction.
HOT GLUE ALL THE WAY.
Nina, Nick and I are vindicated that Nicole also saw this ensemble as a costume and not as lingerie.

What Did Laura Wear?

Dear Laura, Scarlett, Phaolo and Tbone,

During season three we received very quick glimpses of Laura Bennett and the clothes that she wears. As a 40-year-old mom of four who is steadily trying to de-frump her wardrobe, I wanted to be able to look more closely at Laura's clothes because, except for the cocktail dresses, her look seems so achievable. I especially wanted a close look at that white trench coat with some sort of print(!) on the bottom.

My daughter Victoria graciously offered to make screencaps of Laura. And now we know what that print is on the trench coat. Delightful! I want one! There's also a screencap of Laura in her BPR shirt. And a shot of her wearing the jacket she made for the dog challenge. We even caught her without the red lipstick.

Actress Julie Bowen has requested some maternity wear from Laura Bennett! We'll be on the lookout. Thanks, Deb, Katie and Brenda. Speaking of Laura - I haven't heard any news on her baby. I believe her official due date is tomorrow. We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

There are three stops left on the Macy's Tour. Today is Dallas. Our own Phaolo will be there. It will be very very sad if he doesn't get a golden ticket.... Then on Thursday Tim and Angela will be in Chicago and on Saturday they go to Leawood Kansas.

Speaking of Phaolo, he has a great tribute to our second-place contest winner up on Project Yawnur. We heart Phaolo!

Halloween Contest Winners: 2nd Place

There were 14 different Jeffrey Sebelia entries in our Halloween contest, but none more inspired than Pete Wilson's. And as I'm sure you can imagine, there is quite a story behind this costume:

Dearest, dearest BPR - I'm thrilled to be able to send you these photos - five photos may seem like overkill, but I want to make sure you see all the parts of my costume. That and as my purse, including my camera, were stolen that night (I should have known better than to have used a purse when the original outfit didn't have one), I had to cobble together shots from my friends' cameras.

I've had a rough month, and I wasn't excited about Halloween at all until I had the idea to make Jeffrey's final dress from his collection- especially in Los Angeles, on the streets of West Hollywood, I knew that it would be instantly recognizable and loved. I also wanted to pump up the laugh factor - to have people be amazed by the dress but to also to laugh at the ridiculousness of me in it.

Katy: How could I not love this? Out of all the people who made "model" looks, this one takes the cake. Not only is the dress really done well, but also I love the combination of a model look AND a designer! Who knew Jeffrey could look so good in a dress? Plus, is that a tattoo of Tim Gunn? I want one!

Nick: Genius! Not only did he do Jeffrey but also in Drag, wearing his own Final Dress, and very accurately, with the same fabric. Who knew that "JoAnn's House Of Fabrics" carried the same fabric? He gets extra points for that, as well as wearing 3 inch-heeled ankle boots. My favorite by far. He killed two birds with one stone-costume!

Emmett: Pete Wilson wins a design position at Cosa Nostra. WOW, what a great two-for-one and not everyone can pull off horizontal green stripes. A tribute to the Winner: Jeffrey.

Christie and Chrissy at Topanga Macy's

First off, thank you so much for posting the information about this event. If it wasn't for you, I would never have known about it!

My friend Chrissy and I attended the show on Saturday, November 11th. We arrived at the Macy's around 1:00 PM for the 2:00 PM show. The line was already winding through the store! I'm not sure why they had us call for reservations. None of the employees seemed to know anything about reservations and we were seated in a "first come first served" fashion.

Just caught this Sunday's "Your Business" on MSNBC. They featured the up and coming design team behind the Vena Cava label. None other than TIm Gunn was a guest panelist. He provided insight about what it takes to make it in the fashion design industry from a business standpoint. Once again, he as fab! You could tell that he was still in Seattle - the Space Needle gave his whereabouts away!

Halloween Contest Winners: 3rd Place

Thanks to everyone who entered BPR's Halloween contest, your creativity was amazing! Our panel of guest judges - Katherine Gerdes, Andrae Gonzalo, Emmett McCarthy and Nick Verreos - have finished their deliberations. We can't wait to show you all of the entries, but first we will count down our prize winners.


Our 3rd place finisher comes from Andrew:

This is my boyfriend, Jason, who dressed up as Tim Gunn. And yes that is an official Red Lobster tag and a pregnant Heidi Klum on his lapel. We imagined if Tim drank, he drank scotch.

Let's see what the judges had to say:

Andrae: Scary Tim Gunn. Although I've never seen Tim in a fabric with such a sheen, the bone structure on this contestant is strikingly similar to the original Smith and Wesson. If it's even possible, could they be cast from the same mold?

Katy: While there were many dead on Tim Gunns, the little Heidi Klum in the pocket was what pushed this "Tim" to the top for me! He managed to have 2 PR personalities in one costume. Plus the facial expressions and poses are perfect!

Nick: To me, this was the most creative Tim entry. Of course, I especially loved the Barbie in his handkerchief pocket, as well as the name tags, and the photo of him holding his much-needed cocktail after a 12-hour Project Runway day at the workroom with the crazy designers was very funny indeed!

Congratulations Andrew and Jason! Your entry finished in 3rd place and you've won an assortment of products from TRESemmé!

Sing with me! "It's Project Runway time! It's Project Runway time!"

After weeks of anticipation, the big day had finally arrived: Tim and Angela were coming to Macy's Topanga! I'd spoken with Karen in the Macy's executive office twice since first seeing the BPR post on October 17th regarding the Macy's tour, so I knew the turnout was likely to be high. With that in mind, I arrived nearly two hours early to find a line already a few dozen people deep (one group had actually spent the night in the parking lot to ensure they'd be the first in line; their cars were painted with "Tim Gunn rocks!" and other sayings). Word was quickly spreading that the "phone reservations" many of us had made didn't guarantee anything; the only people with truly reserved seats were "Macy's By Appointment" customers. Grumbling ensued. Fortunately, my fellow grumblers and I had gotten there early enough that we needn't have worried about getting seats. Moral of the story: get there early!

Oh, the anticipation of meeting “The Gunn”!! I was terribly distracted all day at work and we (fellow rabid PR fan – Francine and I) almost had to attend the event camera-less. As Francine (who works 2 full time jobs) and I emailed back and forth yesterday, she realized that she had forgotten to bring her camera to work. Egad, what do we do? Beg, borrow, steal or purchase a new digital in the next 5 hours? Dedicated friend that she is, Francine went home at lunch and grabbed not only hers but a second camera so we could both shoot to our heart’s content.

Tomorrow, Project Runway season one darling Austin Scarlett will be at Saks Fifth Avenue at 717 N. Michigan Ave., where we imagine he will be as perfectly coiffed and bright-eyed as ever. From 11-4, he will be having a trunk show for his bridal collection pieces for the Kenneth Pool line.

If you are in Minneapolis, Katy Gerdes will be emceeing a chocolate fashion show this weekend. Have fun Katy!

Next, we have an excellent report from Beth, one of our 'Seattle Bureau' reporters, on yesterday's Macy's event that featured Tim Gunn and Angela Keslar.

Greetings team BPR!

Just thought I'd pass along a quick note and some photos from the Seattle event this evening.

We arrived at the Stewart Street Room at the downtown Macy's. We were 40 minutes early and there were already a ton of people there! Apparently, over 600 people had RSVP'ed for the event. Soon the room filled up and we were ready to begin.

Tim came out, welcomed us (as PR's biggest market) and answered a few questions that had been collected from the audience. When asked what his favorite PR creation was over all three seasons, he responded that Austin Scarlett's corn husk dress was his absolute favorite - not only for it's ingenuity but also because it set the tone for the season and the series. He also commented on the judging process and how in this season's finale, judges were solely looking at what was being presented in the tents at Bryant Park and not the whole scope of design work over the season. He related this to Michael's collection, and he also expressed some disappointment in his work, thinking he was isolated when he went home to Atlanta. He answered a few more questions and then it was on to the fashion show!

What a night!

I went to the opening of Malan Breton’s new store last night. Why is it that sometimes the skies just don’t cooperate at these events? The weather in the NYC area was dreadful – massive rains, floods, washed away roads, etc. I caught the bus from my corner in New Jersey at 5:10 and didn’t make it to Malan’s until 7:30! However, it was worth every second!

BPR <3 Project Rungay!

Just in case you missed it, those fabulous Project Rungay boys are blogging about Season One! So far, they've only covered the first episode and they have mangaged to mine enough material from "Innovation" to keep readers happy for an entire week! Of course - it was a heck of a first episode and a heck of a season. I can still remember sitting and watching all by myself. It's much more fun to watch with the Rungay boys!

Here is the way it works:

On Monday we watch the preview of that week's episode. Then on Wednesday we will all watch the episode together. Throughout the week, the boys will cover the winner, the loser, the models, the challenges and all the fun that they can glean from that particular week.

After Season One, they'll go straight into Season Two and hopefully by then we'll all be ready for Season Four!

Clarissa at Lela Boutique

Hey all! I had the opportunity to meet CLARISSA (Michael's model in the finale) at a terrific little boutique in Third Ward area of Milwaukee. The store hosting Clarissa was called Lela Boutique. If you live in Milwaukee you *have* to come to this store! Don't live in Milwaukee? Take a look here.

Lela sells a terrific mixture of current contempory clothing from up-and-coming national and local designers and a small but well-selected group of vintage clothing and handbags. The owners let me in a wee bit early and I was lucky enough to get a tour and learn more about the store. If you are in Charlotte North Carolina, you can attend Runway for the Ballet, a fundraiser for N.C. Dance Theatre at the Booth Playhouse in The Blumenthal Performing Arts Center on Sunday. Starr Ilzhoefer's designs will be featured.

If you are in South Florida, (My folks live in Coral Springs - Hi Mom! Hi Dad!) you can go to the Macy's store at The Galleria in Fort Lauderdale and meet Nina Garcia on Saturday at 2 p.m. RSVP: 305-577-2172

If you are in Milwaukee, you can meet Clarissa Anderson on Saturday between 10 AM and noon at a local boutique.

If you are near Manhassett, New York you can meet Austin Scarlett at the Kenneth Pool Trunk Show.
