Project Runway's Alison Kelly Releases "The BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook"

Project Runway season 3 designer, Alison Kelly has co-authored a sewing book for diy fashion fans.

"The BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook" contains fully customizable patterns for a coat, dress, skirt, blouse and bag. Examples of variations of the designs are presented in the book from BurdaStyle.com members from around the world. It's really inspiring!

The BurdaStyle Sewing Handbook is scheduled for release on November 1st. Click here to pre-order on Amazon.

BPR: How did you first become involved with BurdaStyle?

AK: Since 2008 I have been working part-time as Creative Director and Editor of BurdaStyle.com. This unique position fulfills my undying love for DIY fashion and sewing, reminding me of why I started designing in the first place, while providing a creative platform to play with design ideas.

As co-author and creative director of the BSHB, as well as writing the book in the 'voice' of BurdaStyle, I designed the 5 paper sewing patterns included in the book, and was responsible for overseeing various aspects such as: choosing the contributing designers, sourcing fabrics and trim, planning photo shoots, casting models, styling the final looks, working with the technical writer and designer, and juggling myriad revisions from the editor!

BPR: How long have you been working on the book?

AK: A year and a half.

BPR: Which is your favorite project from the book?

AK: It's like choosing a favorite child-- but I'd have to say the skirt, because while the pattern is deceivingly simple, you can enhance the design by choosing an interesting fabric combo, like nude lace with a scalloped edge over a black silk lining.

BPR: How has your career benefited from your appearance on Project Runway?

AK: This question comes up a lot and the answer is always the same-- it has benefited greatly and I also believe it's what you make of it. Not winning garnered a lot of support which has turned out to be an advantage. I've ended up working on many exciting projects because of my appearance on the show. I've been designing my clothing line, Dahl, ever since, doing wholesale and custom orders. Today people still buy the black crocheted top I wore on the show from my website. I can tell where our season is airing around the world by looking at my website stats-- all of a sudden there will be a bunch of traffic from Chile or Sweden, it's great.

Recapalooza!

Clearly one of the great benefits of appearing on Project Runway is the possibility that Tim Gunn might come over to your house and make mojitos. Let's see what the recappers have cooking in their kitchens this week:

Eric3000 is stuck in a time warp...
Uncle Nick is racing back to the cruise ship...
JordanBaker missed the World Series for this and is not pleased...
Maxthegirl gets a little insensitive...
Democracy Diva warns you that the fix is in...
Karen is barely hanging on....
Brian is hoping for sanity from the judges...
Mellie checks in after a brief respite...
Tim gives Second City Style the best quotes...
Laura Bennett mixes some drinks...
Peach Carr is still at it...
Blogging Life is back for the finale...
And Toyouke is even tiring of it all.

Next week we get a winner! Will the recapping corps revolt? Stay tuned...

Pretty On The Outside

Artist David Gilmore, a longtime friend of BPR, sends in his latest inspiration:

He comes from the more sequins, sparkles and drama the better approach to design. More is more! Leopard shoes with plaid pants --- sure! A corsage on a beautifully draped gown-- oh hell yeah! And Joshua isn't one to shy away from controversy--- screw that! This one is all hiss and confrontation. And those eyebrows! Those eyebrows....... It's as though they were generously and precisely cut from black patent leather.

BPR Live Play By Play/Party: Episode 13

Tonight On BPR

Photo: Barbara Nitke/Lifetime Entertainment Services, LLC

It's the penultimate episode of Project Runway Season 9 and the champagne flutes are already being busted out. Will we see a final 4 on the runway at Lincoln Center or is there one last, cruel cut in store this evening?

Of course we will also be treated to Tim Gunn's home visits to the designers, long a favorite here at BPR. Here's the plan tonight:
  • Tbone and suzq will be locked in the BPR blog booth as we provide live play by play coverage of tonight's episode. We'll have our regular cast of BPR characters on hand commenting right along and invite you join us. Pre-show coverage begins at 8:30 p.m.
  • A reminder that another episode of "After The Runway" with Zanna Roberts will air at 10:30 p.m. We'll keep the party room open for that mess. Laura Bennett is back this week to grill the final 4.
  • After the show tell us what you really think in our weekly reactions thread, posted immediately after the show ends.
Will your favorite make the final cut? Join us tonight on BPR!
