Amanda's Take - Season 10, Episode 2, Candy Couture

Amanda Fields examines each model's performance in the episode.

A highlight:

Elena's model looks like she hates life. She can't stand that dress, can't stand the day she's having, can't stand the whole idea. I know that you can wear something crazy and make it look great. It's all in the face!

Thank you Amanda!

A New Interview with Viktor Luna

Madly Chic scored an interview with Project Runway Season 9 finalist, Viktor Luna.

A highlight:

What is your design aesthetic?

Sophistication punctuated with dark sensuality and a punk rock pulse. My collection is for the woman who is empowered, elegant, and edgy. Black is the color of luxury. I always like to use black but there’s a thought process behind it. I’m not sending out just a sheer black blouse. There are a lot of details like trimming and fastenings that are missed on TV.

I hope people see that in my work. I think forward in what’s coming and what’s going to be on trend, and I try to capture it before other people do. There’s a thought process in everything I design. I don’t just design for my pleasure; I design for people.

BPR Live Play By Play/Party Room

Photo: Barbara Nitke
Greetings party people! It's time once again for BPR's weekly play by play/party room for Episode 2 "Candy Couture". We're going to be running on a major sugar high tonight, so it should be fun.

As a reminder, we are running the party room in our comment thread linked below this post. We think we have worked out some of the Disqus glitches and hopefully everything will run smoother this week. Everyone's welcome, so come on in! Who wants some candy?

Tonight On BPR

Photo: Barbara Nitke
It's unconventional materials challenge night on Project Runway and we get to re-visit one of our favorites from the past - a trip to the candy store! In Season 4, Rami Kashou designed the winner at the Hershey's store that Paula Abdul later bought at auction for $3,000. It also featured a design by Kit Pistol that was later worn by a bride at Dylan's Candy Bar, the site of tonight's challenge.

Team BPR is on hand again for all of your PR game day fun. Here's the plan:

  • Tbone, suzq and the usual cast of BPR crazies will be hosting a live play by play/party room beginning at 8:45 p.m. All are welcome to watch and snark along with us.
  • After the show, be sure to post your thoughts in our weekly reactions thread. Didn't agree with the judges? Tell us all about it.
It should be a pretty sweet time tonight on BPR!

A New Interview with Project Runway Season 9 Designer, Joshua Christensen

Madlychic.com recently scored an interview with Josh Christensen.

A highlight:

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

The best part about my life right now is that I’ve forced myself to find a work/life balance. I recently took up surfing. I need to do something that doesn’t allow me to think about design for a while, and surfing is great because I’m not super good at it. I have to focus on not dying so there’s absolutely no thinking about design when I’m surfing. It’s strictly about surviving.

 Thank you Illysia!

Amanda's Take - Season 10, Episode 1

Project Runway Supermodel, Amanda Fields returns to present her "model's perspective" on season ten. Welcome back Amanda!

From California to NYC, welcome BPR Readers! I'm Amanda Fields and I'm here to give you my take on Project Runway Season Ten from my perspective. I have been honored to be a part of this process and will forever be grateful to be in this glorious and chic Project Runway Family!

Here we go! Back Again for Season Ten! Times Square, New York, baby!

It feels like home to watch designers in that work room at Parsons! I really like this group of people. Seeing the photos on the wall in the work room of the previous winners make me so happy because those are some of the friends I have been so lucky to have in my life!

Gunnar is a petulant child. I am bothered by him. Find your real voice, Gunnar! It's in there somewhere! Quit talking like you're a freakin Kardashian! Just because you and Christopher have similar hair doesn't mean you have the similar personalities!! Christopher said... "He should be on Toddler's and Tiaras, not Project Runway. Wrong show." Well said.

Each designer gets 2 models, one for the existing piece that represents their aesthetic and one for the new companion piece. I am excited to see if they put the better model in the first or second look. I would choose the second, because it needs more help being sold to the judges.
It would seem that a lot of these girls are not coming back for the entire season. Perhaps the show will mix and match them?

Christopher says, "my model is two inches smaller than my dress form. I'm kinda screwed." Use the other model then!! Switch them up.

A New Interview With Project Runway Season 8 Champion, Gretchen Jones

Gretchen Jones talks about sustainable design with Treehugger.

A highlight:

It's wonderful that a sustainable designer like yourself is recognized in the fashion industry. How has that changed you as a designer, or as a person?
GJ: I suppose being embraced as much as I have been...so far anyways, has just inspired me to stay true to myself...both personally and creatively. I'm not trying to be anything other than the type of woman and designer that I have always been and continue to grow into. My identity, both personally and creatively is based on conscientious living, authenticity of experience and comfort within myself...I truly believe that is the 'real' path towards happiness.

BPR Interview with Beatrice Guapo

Project Runway Season 10 designer, Beatrice Guapo, talks to BPR about her experience on the show.

A highlight:

BPR: When they asked you to send one of your looks ahead of time, did you suspect that you would be asked to create a companion piece?

BG: No, I didn't.

BPR: What did you think it would be used for?

BG: I thought maybe we would have to a runway right at the start and there would be an elimination.

Reactions To Episode 1

Photo: Andrew Walker/Getty Images for A&E
Oh, to be the first one eliminated on Project Runway is a bittersweet thing. On one hand, you have been eliminated and embarrassed. On the other, you get a kiss from Heidi and early freedom from the trials and tribulations of the Parsons workroom.

While We Are Waiting

Tim Gunn with Season 10 designer Kooan Kosuke
Photo: Barbara Nitke
As we count down the hours to Road To The Runway and the Episode 1 premiere of season 10, here's a couple of juicy morsels to chew on this afternoon:

  • Don't miss Heidi Klum's dishy interview with The Huffington Post. She talks about her favorite past designers, two troubled designers from S10 and the promise of an unpopular auffing: "We have someone right now, for example, but I can't really say his name. But there's one guy, great designer, but then he really couldn't make it work that one challenge so he had to go. It was only fair."
  • Project Runway was nominated this morning for four Emmy Awards, including it's eighth (!) consecutive nomination for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. Will The Amazing Race ever lose?
Can you tell we are getting excited?

Tonight On BPR

Photo: Andrew Walker/Getty Images for A&E
Welcome back Runway fans! Tonight is more than just the start to another new season, it's a celebration of sorts. Project Runway marks it's 10th season, Season X if you will, and who could have imagined what has resulted from it's humble beginnings. We can argue about how the production quality has changed, the sinking pool of designer talent level, the questionable judging decisions. But we also have to acknowledge that the show remains as a huge influence for smart reality TV programming. The eight time Emmy nominated show may not be what it used to, but it still remains close to our hearts.

In a nice nod to the past, Project Runway's first ever guest judge Patricia Field returns along with actress Lauren Graham for a huge kickoff in Times Square. Sixteen designers throw their hats into the fray and we'll be here watching it all go down. Here's what we have planned:

  • Tbone, suzq and a cast of other characters will be hosting a live pay by play/party room beginning at 7:45 p.m. ET in preparation of the Road To The Runway special at 8:00 p.m. No Cover It Live this season, we're gpoing old school in the comments section.
  • Live play by play and party room continues at 9:00 p.m. for Episode 1. That's 2.5 hours of Project Runway - yikes!
  • After the show, tell us your thoughts on the Season X premiere in our weekly reactions thread.
All are welcome so we hope to see you tonight on BPR!

BPR Field Report From Project Runway Season 10 Party

Project Runway knows how to party and they did it right on a beautiful New York summer night suspended on the Highline in New York City for the exclusive 10th Anniversary party for Project Runway. What a SEW!  Ten years! What an amazing accomplishment!

Everyone was showing off the success with contestants from all seasons including, season one winner Jay McCarroll, season  four hottie Jack Mackenroth, season six finalist Althea Harper, the quirky and delightful season two stand-out Andrae Gonzalo, a thinner All-Star finalist Michael Costello, and season nine runner up Joshua McKinley.

Viktor Luna was stylishly cool with black and white striped pants. The room was filled with fun-loving creative people and boy could you feel it! Heidi Klum made her way around the room as beautiful as ever. A million more pictures exist of her now!

Other favorites of the night??? ...The sweet Kara Janx who is absolutely the most humble shining person you will ever meet. It was great to meet Malan Breton accompanied by his model Grace who was rockin his newest look.

Wesley Nault, Oliver Green, Nicholas D'Aurizio, Emilio Sosa, and Chris March were all creatively styled and poised making their way through the crowds.

Can't wait until the fall to see how these designers challenge themselves creatively, and which of these will be in the new season of All-Stars???

It was a vivid and colorful atmosphere with so many fascinating people who support and encourage each other. In fact all through the night the topic of conversation is when is September going to be here...to see what everyone is creating...and wearing!

Photo: Andrew Walker/Getty Images for A&E

Lifetime is once again kicking off a new season of Project Runway with a "Road To The Runway" special that will air at 8:00 p.m. Thursday just prior to Episode 1. That's 2.5 hours of PR madness, if you need it.

We're going to be hosting our weekly party room and play by play this season as usual but will no longer be using the Cover It Live application. Instead we're going old school and will run the party in the comment section. If you haven't noticed, we are now using Disqus as our new comment system  on BPR. It should be easy for you to log in on an existing account and participate. The party room will open at 7:45 p.m. ET Thursday, hope to see you there!

BPR Interview with Mondo Guerra

Project Runway All-Star Champion, Mondo Guerra talks about his Neiman Marcus Collection, his new line of eyeglasses  for SEE Eyewear, his latest campaign for Merck and more.

Thank you Mondo!

A highlight:

MG: ...right now I am working on the Neiman Marcus Collection and I really want to do it right, so I am concentrating on that right now. I want this to be accessible to my fans and I know that they are looking forward to it. I understand that they are maybe getting a little impatient, but I will try to make it worth the wait. Also, I want to time this all to hit at the same time so that I can make a real impact.

BPR: How many pieces are in the collection for Neiman Marcus?

MG: Ken and I got together and originally started with about 22 pieces. You know how I work - I am going in with 250 pieces and I have designed all the accessories, and the tags and all of the prints and everything else. I treated this as an artist. Anyway, we have narrowed everything down to about 12-15 pieces, but it might drop down to about nine. It is a true capsule collection.

BPR: Will you be at Fashion's Night Out?

MG: I will be there, yes.

BPR: Is there a specific location?

MG: I will be at a major retail location along with other Project Runway designers.
