Project Runway Author and Designers Featured at The National Arts Club April 19

The National Arts Club Fashion Committee presents:

FashionSpeak Fridays

Project Runway: The Show That Changed Fashion Friday, April 19th 6-8pm

"As you know in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day, you're out. " Heidi Klum

For ten glorious seasons we have heard the iconic line uttered on the groundbreaking television series, Project Runway.

To commemorate this decade of fashion eye candy, journalist Eila Mell goes behind the scenes of this television and fashion landmark with her new book, Project Runway: The Show That Changed Fashion. She reveals how the show began and developed over the years, highlights ten seasons of hits and misses, and reveals what the designers are doing today. She also interviews the people behind the scenes, the top designers as well as workroom mentor Tim Gunn and judges Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, and Michael Kors.

Eila Mell is one of the industry’s go-to fashion authors, previously authoring New York Fashion Week: The Designers, the Models, the Fashions of the Bryant Park Era. Eila has been featured in a variety of media including The New York Times, Marie Claire, Zink Magazine, ELLE Canada, The Huffington Post and The Insider on CBS. She is also the New York editor and on-air correspondent of fashionWATCH Canada,.

Joining Eila in conversation are favorite contestants Andrae Gonzalo, Emilio Sosa and Viktor Luna .

Books will be available for purchase.

BPR Interview with Andrae Gonzalo

Project Runway All-Star designer, Andrae Gonzalo talks about his experience on the show.

BPR:  This is Laura Kluvo from Blogging Project Runway and I'm on the phone with Project Runway All-Star designer, Andrae Gonzalo - Hi Andrae!

AG:  Hello!

BPR:  Congratulations on making the cast of the All-Stars!

AG:  Thank you!

BPR:  What is the best thing about being an All-Star?

AG:  I have two answers actually.  First, there was a period of time during the filming that we believed that Michelle Obama was going to be a judge.  There was evidence that really fed that fantasy.  That was probably the best fifteen minutes of my life...

Also, being an independent fashion designer is just so difficult and for the first time in the history of the show, the prize is so generous.  Just contemplating the possibility of winning the prize... Not just the seed money, but the technology and the equipment and the SPACE.  I live in New York and space comes at a really big premium.  When you are making your own samples, you need a really big table and space is such a luxury.

Just the window - being able to look through that window into the opportunity, that was great.

New Designs From Andrae Gonzalo

Project Runway Season 2 contestant, Andrae Gonzalo, presents a new collection for Mikael Aghal in New York.

All Photos: Adrianna Favero
Model: Alexandra Aguilera
Hair and Make Up: Clair Marshall

Gonzalo's contributions to the Mikael Aghal line are elegant & glamorous, each having an individual narrative & theatrical sensibility. Gonzalo jokes that, "If all the world's a stage, then you'd better think about what you're wearing before you leave the wings".

Multiple layers of chiffon suggest, "I'm whimsical, but delicately confident." Sumptuously draped matte jersey says, "I'm literally well-armed, beautifully dangerous."

All of them are meant to exude a sense of strength, power, pride & elegance. Despite the classical dressmaking techniques & red carpet appeal, Mikael Aghal promotes wardrobe versatility. Two wearable looks can be had for the price that other labels charge for a gown that is only worn once.
