Malan Breton at Fashion Week

This just in from BPR Field Reporter Holly:

Malan's show was fabulous! Lots of the models were from PR, including Moon (met her and her lovely parents), Amanda and Nazri. The collection was very romantic and really lush.

I met Chloe Dao, Emmett McCarthy, Angela Keslar and Malan, of course. All were friendly and gracious. I saw Daniel Franco briefly but he looked busy, so no meeting.

Nina Garcia had a front row seat, patiently waiting, waiting. Are all shows fashionably late to begin? Big clutch of cameras, dj music pumping and out came the models.

I saw two of the three garments I sewed, a thrill. The third was edited out. Sweetly, I was thanked in the program! My name appears higher on the list than Tim's and Heidi's. Tee hee!!

It was a great day!

Thanks Holly; click here for more of her pictures!

Speculation For Episode 10

So far, we have only the Bravo previews to work with (you can click here for the YouTube version of the one from the Bravo website). (ETA:Click here for the Yahoo preview in which we learn absolutely nothing.) Since there is a regular episode scheduled for next week, we think it's safe to say that there will be a single elimination Wednesday taking us from the Final 5 down to the Final 4. That gives us four collections at OFW on Friday, similar to seasons 1 and 2. It will be fun guessing again which of the 4 will be the decoy. Or will there even be a decoy?

The big question this week: who are the 2 "surprise" guests? Laura is heard mentioning the Olsen twins, but is that just a throw-away line from her?

Who will win and, more importantly, who will be auf? At this point in the game, it will be sad to see any of these talented designers leave. We see Kayne sketching with a pair of black shoes at his work table. What are those for? Hmmmm......

Also, will this be the episode that we learn about Heidi's badly dubbed "benefits of winning that will be revealed in a future challenge"? What's that all about?

ETA: Bravo schedule now shows no new episode next week on September 20. Episode 11 will now air on September 27. Thanks black cherry.

PR at Fashion Week

This is a HUGE week for Project Runway in NYC. First, Malan Breton and Daniel Franco will both be showing off their Spring 2007 collections today as part of the 3rd annual Style Lounge event. We have some BeePeR's sewing for Malan and Daniel was kind enough to save us a few seats, so expect insider reports from both shows.

All of the Season 3 designers will be in town this week for the filming of the reunion special, which will air on October 4. (No new episode on September 20, ack!). Then, on Friday, Season 3 of Project Runway hits Bryant Park for the big OFW show. Team BPR will be on hand to provide behind-the-scenes coverage of the finale.

On Friday afternoon, the first Getty Images will emerge and everyone will have a chance to weigh in on the final collections. Team BPR will also be on hand at Jay McCarroll's long-awaited fashion show, sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.

It all comes together Saturday for Project Runway fans at Emmett McCarthy's EMC2 boutique in Nolita. Shop with the designers at "Fall Off The Runway" from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., everyone's invited! Look who will be there: Chloe Dao, Kara Janx, Nick Verreos, Alison Kelly, Angela Keslar, Emmett (of course), and maybe more. Tim Gunn makes a special appearance from 12 -3. This is an event you don't want to miss.

Stay tuned to BPR for all the latest coverage of PR at Fashion Week!

Diana Eng at Cherry Hill, NJ

BPR reader Sandy has this report for us:

Hey everyone! I just got back from the Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey. I had read a couple weeks ago that a Project Runway Season 2 designer would be there so I grabbed my mom and 2 sisters (also big PR fans) and drove there. On the way there we were all guessing who it would be. It was Diana Eng.

We actually met her after the 'runway show' that was put on there. She was really nice, she signed pictures and other merchandise, and we were talking to her for a couple minutes. I asked her if she would be going to Daniel Franco's runway show in NYC on Monday, Sept. 11th and she said she would see me there. So on Monday when I get back from the show I should hopefully have some more pictures to send to you guys. - Sandy

Thanks, Sandy! We're always looking forward to hearing more stories from our readers that get a chance to meet Project Runway alums at various events. Fashion Week should provide many opportunities!

Kara's Fashion Show Recap

BPR's own "The Quiet One" was Kara Janx's special guest at the "Not Your Mother's Fashion Show" event in Columbus Ohio. Here is her report:

The show was a fundraiser for Women Build, a branch of Habitat for Humanity that encourages women to become more involved in the construction aspects of Habitat projects. The Women Build crews are all-female. The Central Ohio group has built seven houses so far, and are working on securing funding for their next home. Click here for info. The event consisted of a pre-show reception with little sandwiches and goodies, a local version of PR, Kara’s runway show, and a cocktail party afterwards (for those people who donated $250-$500 towards Women Build).

Katy's Take: Couture Du Jour

BPR welcomes back our designer insider Katherine Gerdes for her take on Episode 9. Reading Katy just makes you smarter! This week, Katy provides a lesson on Haute couture:

“Holy crap”… that was my first thought at hearing what this challenge was. My next thought (and it lasted for the full hour) was “impossible.” I know that Project Runway has thrown some seemingly impossible challenges to the designers before (wedding dress challenge anyone?), but this is beyond ridiculous! Before I go further, I just want to state that I love the thought of this challenge. To design an Haute Couture dress is not something most of the PR designers have ever done and it’s a great challenge to really make them think outside their design “box.”

Okay…now back to how impossible this challenge is! I can completely see the designers being able to make something that looks couture, but to be judged on the hand-executed details and finishing is almost too much for even Project Runway to ask of a designer. Just designing and constructing an evening gown in 2 days is a task in itself (I assume that’s why there were teams for the Ms. USA challenge?), but to make them hand finish all the details, whew! That’s a lot to ask. I will honestly say that I don’t know how I would have fared had I been around for this challenge. I almost had a nervous breakdown just watching and thinking about this challenge! Just kidding…but seriously, this is so beyond anything I’m used to designing, I think I would have freaked out a bit. Oh well, guess I’ll see how I fare when I tackle this challenge for my “AUF’d Runway” episode, but that will have to wait until I return from fashion week next week! How exciting is that? I can’t wait to see the other designers and watch the final fashion shows! Oh…and I can’t wait for the reunion episode either, I’ve got a few questions for someone, but I’ll get to that later…

Here is a link to the fabric store where the designers shopped in Paris. Thanks Phil for both of these.

Want to tackle your own fashion challenges? Try these from the Rocky Mountain News. Thanks Valerie.

Here is an article about the training that aspiring designers should have. It includes advice from Tim Gunn, Daniel Franco and Vincent Libretti. Thanks Katie and Jenny.

Transcript of Vincent Libretti's Exit Interview on Bravo

Once again BPR thanks MT for her excellent transcription service.

Vincent’s Exit Interview, Part I

No one looks the best on no sleep. The earliest time I went to bed on Project Runway had to be ... 12:00? The latest time I went to bed on Project Runway had to be ... 3:00? So it was kind of rough.

It’s hard to pinpoint a designer as the most talented at all. I think that each of these designers in their own realm of design were the most talented for what they did. And it would be very difficult for one of those designers to try to do what another designer could do. By far. So each of those designers, and especially this season, were all very talented.

BPR Interview With Vincent Libretti

BPR continues its series of interviews with the auf'd contestants as we check in this week with Vincent Libretti. Project Runway provided a showcase for Vincent who had just made a big career change, returning to his labor of love. As we learn in our interview, he's still proud of what he's accomplished:

BPR: Hi Vincent! Where were you Wednesday night and who did you watch the show with? What has been the reaction from your friends and family?

VL: With Nina and Liz, my daughter and wife...they liked my work and felt that I should have stayed.

BPR: What does your daughter think about seeing her daddy on television?

VL: She's sooo proud of me and she realizes it's only TV.

BPR: You took a huge chance by cashing in your 401(k). What kind of work were you doing before getting back into fashion?

VL: In sales, selling ad space. One thing I'd like to clear up .. I did not cash out my 401k to go on Project Runway, I don't understand why they depict it this way. I did it to continue what I love most, right now I have never been happier. I am proud to show my family, especially my daughter, that her dad takes chances in life and believes in his DREAM!!!

Now I cashed my 401k prior to going on the show although the show makes it seem like I did it to get on the show...that's so silly.....

BPR: Who do you consider to be your muse?

VL: anyone who brings life to life.

From The Mailbox

First, a Santino Rice update in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Thanks Marie.

The Entertainment Weekly interview with Vincent has arrived!

Here is a photo-essay from Mark Rose about Jeffrey's designs in the Macy's window.

Be sure to watch The Most with Alison Stewart tomorrow. Tim Gunn will be a guest! Thanks Tricia.

Congratulations Jeffrey!

You took a huge risk by going for that bold plaid and it paid off with a memorable look that your models most obviously loved to wear. When you could have kicked back with immunity you went for the win and wowed us. You showed us that cotton could go couture in the hands of a visionary. Well done, Jeffrey!

Let's find positive things to say about Jeffrey's design and/or Jeffrey. If you have negative comments, please post them here.

Let's Send Some BPR Love to Vincent

Vincent, you went for your dream by cashing in that 401k and you sent us all a message about not giving up. You won the 'Everyday Woman' challenge and you showed us that you never lacked confidence in your own aesthetic. Clearly your model Jia enjoyed working with you. You won't ask your fans to step three feet back.

Let's give Vincent only positive words from the readers here at BPR. Negative thoughts belong here.

A Note From Nick Verreos

Hi Laura:

It's "Uncle Nick". Hope you had a great Labor Day Weekend. The weather here in Southern California was gorgeous. I spent most of the weekend in my friend's pool. Along with my beard and my dark tan, I fear I might be stopped at the airport longer!! Hopefully they will notice my fake Louis Vuitton luggage and realize the only bad stuff I am carrying is old underwear!

I wanted to let you (and the devoted Blogging Project Runway readers), know that I am going to be in Seattle , Washington for the very first time this weekend on September 8th through to Sunday. I have been invited to be at the very first annual IADT Show. IADT is the International Academy of Design and Technology. I will present the Awards for excellence as well as do a "Workshop" the day after. It is open to the public and everyone, especially "Project Runway" fans are most welcomed! The prices are good and not so out of reach.

I am very much looking forward to meeting The Northwest fans of the show! I know that there is more there than coffee-drinking Granola-cruchers!! Maybe fashion-conscious coffee-drinking Granola-crunchers!!

I am forwarding/attaching the official "Press Release" for the show as well the "Poster/Invite". Feel free to post it in your blog if you want to. And, as always , thank you for all the unending support and unconditional love. I also have much admiration for you, the blog and its fans.
No- longer -selling- chicles- in -Tijuana (now in Seattle!),
Nick

Missing Alison? Well, tonight at 7:30pm Alison Kelly will be making an appearance on ACCESS HOLLYWOOD on NBC! Watch her Fall Fashion Forecast and see some of her designs! All designs seen will be available in Shop Dahl at Alison-Kelly.com soon! Thanks Alison.

Remember the teaser that a "Season Two designer" would be appearing at Cherry Hill Mall? Well, it seems that the designer is none other than the charming Diana Eng! Thanks Meredith.

Last, Catherine Malandrino is quoted in Elle.com here. Thanks Anne.

BPR Interview With Angela Keslar

Angela Keslar has certainly experienced her fair share of ups and downs during her run on Project Runway. Often the center of attention from her fellow designers, she proved her design savvy with a win in the Macy's challenge and a strong showing on "Iconic Statement". Angela checks in with BPR to tell us how she continues to be having the time of her life.

BPR: Hi Angela, we are so sad to see one of our favorites go. Where were you Wednesday night and who did you watch the show with? What has been the reaction from your friends and family?

AK: I actually haven't watched the show yet b/c I was in a hotel in nyc for the today show and they didn't have bravo! I am so deeply grateful for everything that happened on the show and everything that is coming out of it- my friends and family are sharing in all the excitement and thrill.

BPR: When did you begin to be interested in fashion design and who have been your inspirations?

AK: I became interested in design sometime around college. i loved to paint and sketch, but I knew that in order to be fulfilled, I would need to apply my creative impulse in a practical, use-able way. I always loved playing dress-up, so I chose clothing.

BPR: What is your favorite item in your wardrobe and why?

AK: My Balenciaga black leather motorcycle jacket from the fall 2005 collection. I cried every time I looked at it for the first week. It is the most amazing jacket ever made.

A Note From Angela Keslar

thanks for doing the sightings- what fun!
so- some more exciting news... i will be working for catherine malandrino on her fashion show for fashion week! i am so happy i don't know what to do with myself. it all happened after we shot the today show.
another crazy happy thing: i got invited to the aol style lounge, right across the way from nbc, and got a ton of free stuff. and not just "stuff"- great stuff! shoes, accessories, alcohol, jewelry, t-shirts, hair products.
anyhow- can't wait to meet you guys!

"Models, This is a Competition for You, Too"

Those are the words that Heidi says to the models when they are standing on the runway wearing those black slips.

We've had eight episodes and only half of them have featured all of the remaining models (the first, third, fifth and sixth). At the beginning of the 'Iconic Statement' episode, two models were eliminated by the luck of the draw. We've had a model selection this week only to find that the designers themselves would be walking the catwalk. Then we see a preview in which the designers are in Paris and other ladies are wearing the gowns.

Does this really feel like a competition for the models this year?

Were You Wondering ...

...what Laura's dress would look like in another color?

Your wish is our command!

Thanks Sandy!

Episode Nine "Couture du Jour" Speculation

The designers are in Paris. We've watched the preview. So what are they designing? Who is modeling? Whose pictures are being pinned to the dressforms? What is the inspiration? What is the challenge? How will they be judged? Where will they be judged? Who will win? Who will be auf? And what's with the EGGS? Theories and speculations go here.

Katy's Take: High Flying Fashion

BPR welcomes back auf'd contestant Katherine Gerdes for her exclusive insider's take on each week's episode:

A “makeover” challenge! I’ve been waiting for one of these. I love to see how the designers would dress themselves or each other (season 2!). I don’t know about other designers, but for me, I have the hardest time dressing myself compared to dressing other people! I’ve been wanting to make something for me to wear to the final runway show, so I’ve decided that this week of my “AUF’d Runway” I’ll make my “jet-setting” outfit the one that I’ll wear to at OFW! Well… unless it totally sucks…

I do have to say that I loved the concept of making them travel to test the outfits, but I think it was pretty crappy to fly them out there, only to send someone home the very next day! I know it makes for some dramatic TV, but that sucks. Oh well. I’m also sad that I didn’t stick around long enough to make it out to Paris, but I think it would have been worse to be the very last one out (Robert) right before they left!

Who is Holly Hobbie?

When Tim asked Angela "Doesn't this kinda look Holly Hobbie?" did you know who he meant? For those of us who grew up in the 70's Holly is an icon of course. Did you know that Holly has been modernized? Girls today think of Holly as looking like this:

Bettie Bloodshed's Transcript of Tim's Podcast For Episode Eight

BPR once again thanks our champion transcriber, Bettie for her excellent service and the Project Rungay boys for help with the French addresses!

Hi I’m Tim Gunn and this is my podcast for Episode 8. So little summary, last week, Robert was out and we were sorry to see him go. Vincent was the winner (I’m still in a state of shock) and Jeffrey was simply happy that he was still in. A very emotional ending for him, but he’s still with us, thankfully!

Apparently, this is not unusual - Maryann spotted this one on eBay as well...look familiar?

Fleurchon..er Fleurchamps Sighting

I think this should be a new feature on BPR. So many of you are sending us "fluerchon sightings" that it has become just about impossible to keep track of them all. So, the next time you spot a fleurchon (Feel free to use creative spelling - or just say "Angela's Signature Rosettes") please include a description of the sighting and a link to a photo or send the photo itself, put "Fleurchon Sighting" in the subject line and send it to Team BPR.

At this point telling us "Portia diRossi's dress had a fleurchon on it" doesn't help. Where was she? What event? When? Include a photo. We will try to have a regular feature called "Fleurchon Sightings" every week. What do you think? Also, we would like to see NEW photos, not something that Jean-Paul Gaultier did in 1996.

ETA: We have a ruling: The yoyo is "Angela's signature rosette." The larger gathered flowers found on the hem of the Hepburn dress are identified as the "fleurchons." We are waiting to hear from Angela on the official spelling. BOTH of these will qualify as "Fleurchon Sightings." Extra points for correct identification.

Just trying to keep things fun here on BPR!

Thanks Trixie.
