BPR Interview with Daniel Esquivel

Project Runway All-Stars Season 3 designer, Daniel Esquivel, talks about his experience on the show.

A highlight:

BPR: Congratulations on making the cast of All-Stars!

DE: I'm very grateful to be asked to do this. I had fun!

BPR: Our readers strongly disagree with your elimination.

DE: I did read your page because I like it and I appreciate that. At the end of the day, it is the judges' decision. Avant Garde could be just about anything and I just had fun.

BPR: We are also concerned about your recovery - tell us about your accident and how you are doing.

DE: Well, last Monday I was leaving a meeting and a driver hit my left rear wheel and my car actually flipped over. I have a concussion and whiplash and a cut on my leg, but I am recovering. I mean it is very uncomfortable, I can't sleep, but I am doing what the doctor tells me and honestly it could have been much worse. I am very grateful that it didn't hurt my sewing hand!

The EMTs and the firemen and everyone told me that when they see this, it is usually much worse. Laura, this really opened my eyes. It is a long road to recovery, but I have a new lease on life and I am very grateful to be alive.

Austin Scarlett premiered his signature collection at the NY Armory on the upper east side on Sunday during brunch in NYC. Each couture piece was a classic silhouette inspired by the 30's, 40's, and 50's, Austin says these silhouettes are the true to a woman's figure.

His mission in creating this line was to celebrate the sheer joy of a woman because that is what he wants to offer his customer. Guests at Austin's show saw hand-painted silks and ballgowns not only for a wedding but for any occasion.

For this collection Scarlett referred to creative spaces like museums - and as far as inspiration -a lot of his free spirit comes from his mother, who is doing great!!!

For all those readers who have been asking Austin says Thank you!

A Visit to Gordana Gehlhausen's New Santa Monica Boutique

Project Runway All Star, Gordana Gehlhausen, has opened a new Goga boutique in Santa Monica.  I visited her last week on a road trip to California!

The new shop is located at 2710 Main Street in Santa Monica.
It's a great spot with lots of shopping to tempt me.

There is a raised runway set up in the center of the store with mannequins modeling the latest Goga designs.  Gordana also hosts fashion shows in the space.

Gordana works at the back of the store, sewing and fitting her clients.

She is also proud to support many charity causes in her community.

Gordana's couture designs are available for sale in the shop as well as her ready-to-wear garments.  Goga also carries designs from Michael Costello and Jerell Scott.

Thank you Gordana!

Mondo Guerra at Neiman Marcus All-Star Event in Denver

Project Runway season 8 finalist and All-Star contestant, Mondo Guerra, appeared at Neiman Marcus in Denver yesterday and our own Tropical Chrome sends us this report. Thanks TC!

Mondo Guerra made a personal appearance at Neiman Marcus in Denver on Thursday. Neiman Marcus had a table set up on the second floor, with two mannequins wearing some of Mondo's fashions and handbags. It was also conveniently right around the corner from where they had hot cider available for holiday shoppers - shopping is thirsty work!

Given that it was midday on a Thursday the atmosphere was laid back and mellow, which gave every fan a chance to take pictures and talk to him personally. Mondo signed posters and answered questions, at least those that he could answer! I asked if the delay in broadcasting All Stars made it more difficult, and he said yes, very much so. We talked a little about the last season (he agreed with most of BPR that too little design was shown) and when we talked about All Stars, he expressed admiration for Mila's work. I told him he's a fan favorite to win All Stars and he just smiled - he's not giving away anything, so we'll just have to watch and see.

I also had a chance to talk to Mondo's assistant Remi, who said that there will be weekly Project Runway All Stars viewing parties at the Beauty Bar, 608 East 13th Avenue in Denver. As of now there are special guests scheduled for two of the parties: Michael Costello on January 5 for the premiere, and Peach Carr for the February 16 episode (which is also a benefit for the Colorado Aids Project). Mondo seemed really excited about his "All Star Thursdays" and invited each fan to attend.

It was great to be able to attend one of Mondo's appearances and get the chance to meet him. I'm definitely cheering for him in All Stars!

A New Interview with Mondo Guerra from Marie Claire

Project Runway Season 8 finalist, Mondo Guerra talks about All-Stars and more.

A highlight:

Well, what did you hope to accomplish this time around?
I wanted to expand on my design. I was really trying to do new silhouettes and use unexpected fabrics that were out of my own comfort zone. The last thing I wanted was to go in doing the same thing I'd shown before.

Any spoilers for us fans who can't wait until it airs in January?
The challenges were designed to really make the designers work hard. You know how in the regular season, there'll be a challenge where the audience thinks, "This is so simple." You won't see any challenges that are easy.

And who were your Survivor-style allies this time around?
I love Michael Costello. He was on my season, and we became best friends. We still text every day. Our boyfriends are jealous of our friendship. We're basically dating! Ha, I'd totally date him at some point!

Who surprised you most?
Mila Hermanovski. Coming off her season, people said she was so frigid and cold. Honestly, I found her to be very mature and honest not only in her demeanor but in her design work. I was impressed.

A Note From Sweet P

Hi BPR,

I want to say I did love doing the All-Star Challenge, but was not happy about the way it was edited. I think that we came there with a mutual respect for each other and because there was no real drama they chose to edit it as if there were.

I don't want to get too philosophical, but I guess they subscribe to the thought that people don't want too watch something positive... For crying out loud Project Runway is not Tila Tequila so just let it be real. I prefer to watch shows like Top Chef Masters, no bull, no backstabbing but real mutual respect, kindness and great talent. That is where I see a big difference in the production.

We were all friendly, especially us girls. We love each other but they chose to edit it in a way where it looks as though Uli & I are not at all friendly. We were laughing about how we like the same things. As you can see our stuff came out totally different. I love mine and I love hers.

I don't want to say who should have won or not won. I think it is subjective. I think we all did our thing and they all have merit. We had so much fun. Of course Santino made all of us laugh so much.

I had such a great time and felt very confident the entire time. I finished on time for once even though I still chose hard-to-sew fabrics (I said I wouldn't make that mistake.) I still love my collection and feel it is very wearable, sellable and I can definitely see Nicole Kidman in my red carpet dress(great color for her.)

I also want to say it sucks to read when people rip us to shreds. ANY OF US! That is one reason I don't look at blog comments anymore. I can't stand the nameless, faceless cowards who stand in judgment of people who are actually doing something. I guess they never heard "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." It is funny how not one person has ever come up to me and said those things.

With that being said I know people have favorites etc, but really some of the name calling and cheap shots are so unkind.

I would suggest meditation.

Love,
Sweet P

Reactions to the All-Star Challenge

What did you think? Did the All-Star Challenge live up to your expectations? Was it the right balance of drama and talent? Was it fun to see these designers competing again? Did anything disappoint you?

Post your reactions here - thanks everyone!

Edit to add:
Given the reactions to the outcome, we decided to post a poll to this tonight:

Project Runway: All-Star Challenge Party!

The All-Star Challenge promises great drama and a chance to see some of our favorite designers from past seasons! Only Jeffrey Sebelia is a former winner so the rest have a lot to prove. Or will Jeffrey win once again?

The prize for this challenge is $100,000 and that has to be a huge incentive.

Mark Y and Tropical Chrome will be hosting this party with Team BPR chiming in as often as we can.

It's rough being out here on the west coast, but I'm making the most of things. Champagne is chilling and the beer is on ice.

Good luck designers!

A "Beautifully Satisfying" New Interview with Tim Gunn

Tim talks to Mo Ryan about Project Runway Seasons Six and Seven, Models of the Runway, Lifetime and the All-Star Challenge. Here are some highlights:

"We have drama to beat the band, including a model who refused to wear the garment. I’m in the sewing room begging her -- well, not begging her. I’m quite firm in saying, 'This is your responsibility. It’s not a matter of personal taste -- you are a mannequin basically. A walking mannequin. Put it on,'" Gunn said.

Filming the "All-Star Challenge" during the Season 7 taping was extremely hard on the normally easy-going Gunn: "I was as close to a psychotic breakdown as I’ve ever been... Going from one location to the next, wardrobe changes, mic changes; back and forth, and back and forth, and back and forth."

TG: We have a really interesting mix of youngsters and more mature people with a lot of experience. And make no assumptions about the experience being an asset. There have been people who've been asserting that it's not fair, that these people with more seasoning have an advantage. Not necessarily the case at all. And frankly, I'm as surprised as I believe the viewers will be by the deftness and the agility of these younger people because I was thinking, "Oh, these kids are going to burn out." But they've stayed with us. And I'm not saying the more mature people leave right away but it's a very interesting season to watch. Very
