Congratulations, Althea

This is a classic case of synergy between model and designer. Tanisha articulated what she wanted and Althea interpreted it bringing her own aesthetic to three ambitious pieces. In less skilled hands fashioning separates in mere hours could have been disastrous. Althea provided herself formidable in the previous outings and this week she demonstrated why she should be a contender to take Season 6. Stylist Jennifer Rade said that she wanted to leave with the jacket while Heidi Klum called it very chic. Marie Claire's Zoe Glassner complimented the ensemble as being a "breath of fresh air." A suit was never less stuffy. Congratulations, Althea! Congratulations Team Harper!

BPR Love for Qristyl Frazier

From the first episode of Season 6 you stood out as the sassy designer that loves color. You came to the show already established in the field with a successful business and clients such as Janet Jackson and Queen Latifah. You coined the phrase "Plus Sexy" that defined your aesthetic and showed how you embraced a segment of the population often ignored on the runway. You've had struggles on your way to the top but that has made you more determined and focused. Your personality is as big and bold as the looks that you create. Now because of your exposure on the show women of size will know you to be the one that understands how to make them look and feel desirable. One can't help but think that this is the start of something big.

Tim Gunn Wants to see Nina in Neoprene

Tim Gunn is determined to win Ra'mon's dress at auction because he wants to give it to Nina Garcia.

"I was stunned by the editing of the Thursday show," says Gunn, who doesn't see the episodes until they air. "To be perfectly blunt with you, the storyline as I was living the show was that Ra'mon was going home…that he and Mitchell were BOTH going home," Gunn told USA TODAY's Cindy Clark in an interview... to chat up his new comic, Loaded Gunn. "Then you see on the show that Ra'mon is dyeing the garment in the sink. That's after I made him take it out of the toilet, which he said he was using because it had a deeper basin. He was desperate to get some dye on it."

"On the runway, the deliberation went on and on, with no one in Ra'mon's camp other than Nina. She was intent upon Ra'mon winning based on innovation. Heidi was like, 'Who would wear that?' and Nina firmly said, 'I would!'

This makes the auction WAY more interesting....

Project Runway looks to rebound tonight after a disappointing week that saw it get beat out by HGTV's Design Star as the most watched cable reality show. This time, the models get to rule the roost in Episode 4: "What A Woman Wants". BPR will be on hand with our cast of usual charachters to make your experience more fun:

BPR Interview with Mitchell Hall

Hi BPR! Thanks for the love post! I haven't been reading the blogs, but my mom read yours to me and it really meant a lot, what a ride!

1. How hard was it to wait out the year between the filming of the show and the air date of this episode?

The wait was fine, it was the apprehension that was so difficult. I knew what happened while I was in Los Angeles but I wasn't sure how I was going to be portrayed, what was going to be shown on television and what was going to be edited out and edited together. We see the shows the same time as you do! There was certainly a sense of relief for me when my time on Project Runway ended.

2. Who did you watch the show with?

I have to be honest I haven't watched episodes 2 or 3 yet! I think I'll wait until Season 6 comes out on DVD or at least until things die down. I did watch the premiere with my closest friends and a few fans of the show - there was great food and a lot of champagne involved! My friends and family have always been such strong supporters of anything I do and Project Runway was no different.

3. Were you surprised by anything that you saw in the episode? Were you surprised by anything that you heard in the confessionals?

I can only reference what I've heard from my boss Heather who is Project Runway's, and Blogging Project Runway's biggest fan and the only person I've really talked to about the show. From what I know from her I'm disappointed that more credit wasn't given in the editing room to what I said on the runway and to the work that I did do on our winning pieces in challenge three.

While Ra'mon was supposed to be working on the initial design for the chiffon ombre dress that I draped and picked out the fabric for, I was working on a completely reversible swimsuit, which is no small task. When Tim sprung the extra piece, Ra'mon abandoned the chiffon dress until the end, I worked to finish the swimsuit and we worked together on the Avant Garde part of the challenge- I may have only been creatively involved in that simple design but as team leader I did nix several looks that would've certainly put us in the bottom two. I will admit that I was completely surprised that our final looks won the challenge!

For the record, my favorite design from this challenge was the avant-garde dress created by Louise Black and Althea Harper. I was very surprised that this design was dismissed as part of the "middle" group. In fact I felt that the three "middle" pairs were the three best in this episode.



The bodice is crafted from zippers and is very well-executed. It fits Tanisha perfectly. The skirt is exuberant and fun and the decoration on the back is fashioned from safety pins - update: They're zipper pulls!

Listening to Tim's workroom critique, we learn that this team made some serious adjustments to the original plan for this look.

This was a fabulous collaboration by two very talented designers.

Model Behavior!

In the industry, models are often booked for things that may overlap and you've just got to make an executive decision. What's better for what I want for my career? You can also ask your agents. I think Erika is probably happy modeling but is excited about pursuing acting so she took the commercial. I can relate! Also, I know that you cannot be in the Screen Actor's Guild AND be on Project Runway. That is the real reason she couldn't come back. But being in SAG brings you to a whole new level in an acting career! I am excited for Erika! I'm also glad they chose to bring back Valerie because she is a great model and seems to have fun being on the show.

Max Azria! Rachel Bilson! Surf wear! Avant GARDE surf wear!? Oh I really liked this challenge. That macrame look was also my favorite and I would have loved to model that! And, as much as I like to say that models are supposed to wear whatever they are given and work it like it's amazing.. there are some pieces that - no matter how good you are - the dislike for the outfit will show through!

Awww Mitchell! He was adorable and funny, great for tv! He should definitely go into hosting!

Congratulations, Ra'mon-Lawrence

We saw you struggle throughout this challenge and how you feared that you would be eliminated. You listened to Tim's concern about the original concept for your avant-garde garment and, changed the design from superhero wetsuit to neoprene mini. And at the last minute you dyed your short dress creating a new pattern that unified the looks through a color story. When your ensembles were singled out, we saw your surprise that you were in the top of the pack rather than the bottom. Rachel Bilson and Heidi Klum both said that they would wear the second look while Nina Garcia said that it made her happy. That's right - Nina was happy! Your partner acknowledged your strong contribution and, in a Project Runway first, a non-team-leader took the win. Well deserved and well played, Ra'mon-Lawrence!

BPR Love for Mitchell Hall

This was a Project Runway first - not only were you eliminated as part of a winning team you were also the LEADER. Some could say that your youthful vision and love of draping was instrumental in this win. But some could also say that your honesty on the runway, telling Heidi Klum and the judges that your partner did the bulk of the work, was your undoing. You left the show as an adorable gentleman that designer Max Azria called a "nice guy." You had the confidence to put yourself out there and to take this career risk and for that we respect you. We can also look at it this way: you left the show on a high note like no other designer in the history of the series. So for the first time in the 4 years of Blogging Project Runway we are going to say congratulations in a BPR Love post.

BPR Interview With Malvin Vien

BPR: Malvin, we are very sorry to see you go! Were you writing a farewell message to the designers at the end of your episode? What did it say?

MV: Quite observant - It was a call for the unconventional, advice for the remaining designers to take risks with their designs... a challenge to design with the intent to "say something" versus "play safe." Innovation comes from risks and risks are spurred by an authentic infatuation with one's own unique perspective. This will define an aesthetic.

BPR: How did you get the silk fabric to resemble feathers?

MV: I pleated silk organza to create the initial base volume and then, built upon this foundation with frayed strips and sewn edges to give the look a visceral appeal. I also made use of the selvage, which was cut to resemble feathers and sewn on as ties for closure.

BPR: Were you sequestered in another apartment after your elimination? Did you and Ari become friends?

MV: ...We bonded over Kombucha.

BPR: After taking another look, your "red carpet" design was very inventive. Was the pleating detail something that you have incorporated into other designs or did you create it just for this?

MV: Thank you...yes, the red carpet design was an original. A lot of work went into planning and orienting seam lines, zipper placement, drape, ensuring pleat memory, etc... With that in mind, the show as a "competition" never really occupied me until I was eliminated. I realized the extent to which Project Runway contenders apply their past designs during each challenge, which is smart and game-savvy...I would have done the same, but that wasn't my intention. I came into the competition with the aim of developing my skills and perspectives. I was just itching for a non-traditional material challenge...

BPR: Besides fashion, what do you love?

MV: Ahhh, too many things...life? Wait, I do love science. In fact, when I was a kid, I seized our upstairs bathroom and transformed it into a dilettante laboratory. Flower vases and wine glasses went missing to become impromptu test tubes in which I mixed shampoos, baking soda and anything I could get my hands on to falsify exuberant discoveries and cure-all elixirs.

"Fashion in Detroit" Update

Project Runway Season Five designer, Joe Faris and rest of the the "Fashion in Detroit" team are working hard to assure that the inaugural event is a success.

This might not be the easiest time to begin a new venture, but the team is determined. Betsey Johnson, Kevin Christiana, and Joe Faris are among the designers showing at the October 1 - 2 event.

"Days of Our Lives" actress, Molly Burnett wore a Kit Scarbo (aka Kit Pistol) design to the Daytime Emmy Awards on August 30th. She looks adorable!

This Week's Guest Judge is Rachel Bilson

I have no idea who is standing next to Tim Gunn at the beach in the preview, but this week's Project Runway guest judge is Rachel Bilson!

For the record, I do believe that Shirin's design was a slam-dunk and completely and definitely worthy of the win in episode two. However, I'd like to take a closer look at Louise's design.



This dress is lovely and flattering from all angles. Louise was thoughtful and prepared enough to purchase the right dye and to know exactly how the lace would absorb the dye to create the color that would match the fabric.

Watching Tim's critique here - you'll see that she was also flexible. She added an extra tier, considered shorts, ruffles, etc. - and listened carefully to Tim.

In the end there was a layer of lace added to the bottom of a slip layer. This adds versatility and a little bit of modesty as well - honestly, this was a much better idea than the shorts.

After two episodes, some of the designers have created two completely different looks - as if they were not made by the same person.

Louise is staying true to her aesthetic and, in my humble opinion, she is definitely one to watch.

ALIVE: When did it become your business?
JL: I set up this little factory in my basement and started making warm-up pants for the dance school I went to. I designed them and sold them for $35 a pair, which was a major mistake; they were way too much work to sell for $35 a pair. It was a huge undertaking and so I had no life, and my boyfriend broke up with me because I spent no time with him. So, yeah, I've been a workaholic since a very young age.

Amanda's Take - Season 6 - Episode 2

I have worked with Monique Lhuillier many times and was so happy she filled in for Michael Kors on this episode! She is a wonderful Mom and always talks about her little boy, Jack!

One thing you can really see on the runway is that how a model feels in her clothes directly reflects how she will walk in them for the judges. Even if it may not be the best look of the episode, if SHE likes it, she will make it look good. There aren't any models this season that are disastrous. Thank goodness! See? Offer the models a prize at the end that involves money and see who wants to participate NOW!

Congratulations, Shirin

As Diane von Furstenburg pointed out last week, a career can be built upon a single look and your frock this week for an expectant mother is just such a garment. There is a HUGE market out there for chic mommy-to-be outfits and, without ever having been pregnant, you instinctually keyed into the features that they want. The flattering belly detailing will look pretty at 5 months or 9 and counting. The lovely neck draping draws the eye up to the glowing face but doesn't detract from the fuller bust. Our readers worried that you were being overly ambitious with the coat but you demonstrated that in your skillful hands the additional piece would elevate this to a win. All of the judges this week would have bought this dress. Well conceived, well executed and well done!
