Jennifer Diederich Fall 2012 Field Report

Project Runway Season 5 designer, Jennifer Diederich presented her Fall 2012 collection on February 12th and BPR field reporter, Jes Switaj sends us this report - thanks Jes!

On Sunday evening I attended the presentation of Suite - Fall 2012 collection by Jennifer Diederich. It was held in an intimate studio location in Soho. Cocktails were mixed during the event by Brooklyn Sodaworks, who conjured up delicious mimosa spin-offs with their grapefruit & basil soda + champagne. Fellow S5 contestant Wesley Nault was also in attendance.

The Suite collection was chic, tailored and charmingly feminine. Jen describes it as “inspired by a girl who feels as graceful as Audrey Hepburn on the inside and yet is clumsy and a little bit of a mess on the outside.” The collection was styled with a touch of Clark Kent (day looks) vs. Superman (night) in mind, and indeed each model definitely gave an air of chic, if not secretive, empowerment.

The girls were whimsically poised atop a colorful mini cityscape with flyaway hair and no-nonsense heels. The main colors of the collection were navy, vanilla, royal blue and light grey, with touches of metallic. Pieces included a delicately crafted chiffon blouse and dress in an adorable handwriting print, a gorgeous blue party dress in lush silk wool, a super cute wool coat with fabric paper airplanes flying from the pockets and a winsome sheath dress made in a subtly metallic cloud patterned brocade.

Overall the collection was finely tailored and delightfully girlish with a healthy dose of vintage charm. Congratulations Jen!

Also, don’t forget to pick up your own original, handmade Suite design at Suite.

Leanne Marshall Fall 2012 - Field Report

Project Runway Season 5 Champion, Leanne Marshall presented her Fall 2012 Collection on February 12th. BPR Field Reporter Jennifer Mara sends us this report - thanks Jen!

New York Fashion Week welcomed Leanne Marshall's 2012 fall collection this afternoon at The Fashion Gallery in Chelsea.

Leanne's "fresh" dress collection was filled with saturated royal blues, greens, and whites, SO saturated that blue dye was left all over her hands!

It was well worth it because according to Leanne, "the very last blue look is my favorite."

When asked if she was thinking about her next collection she rapidly replied; "I've already started working on bridal!"

Leanne also made sure to include a special shout-out to her BPR fans- "Hi Guys! I love you, thank you for all of the support and for all of your nice and touching letters, they keep me motivated and keep me striving."

News from Fern Mallis

The New York Times presents a new interview with Fern Mallis.

Photo: Yana Paskova for The New York Times

A highlight:

“All the good things happening for me came from being nice, and I’m having a ball,” she said, as she set out toward her home on the Upper East Side. By the windows at Saks, as if on cue, a slim young man stopped her in the rain and huggedher. A jeans designer, he gave her his card and asked her to visit. She said she would, absolutely.

“I live for you, Fern, you inspire me,” he said.

It was hard to tell if her eyes were moist from tears or the rain.

“That means so much to me,” she said.

“It means more to me,” he replied.

Amanda's Take - Project Runway All Stars

Project Runway Supermodel, Amanda Fields takes a look at the All-Star models. Thanks Amanda!

This All Star season has been fun to watch! The Miss Piggy challenge was my favorite so far because it reminded me of the early days of the show.

I love that we get to hear a little bit more from the models too! Still no on-screen name credits for them...

Michael Costello's model really sold that little look. On a lesser model he could have been eliminated... to be blunt, if a model had bad legs, say, out of shape, with too much cellulite.. he would have been sent home for creating such a "travesty." However, because Michael's model is beautiful with a fantastic body, she could somehow make sense of that little thing she had on. I like to say that the hard work of modeling comes in the preparation, not the actual job. Discipline in exercise and diet is key to being a fantastic runway model! Great work!!

The same can be said for Jerell's model. My goodness... what an athlete she must be! He was saved by her rockin' bod! If a model had a torso that was a no-no... well he would have gone home too. Somehow when there is a fit, sexy model wearing something they somehow save the fact that the outfit was in bad taste.

Mila's model is gorgeous too (they all are!!) but I think perhaps she is over-selling her looks just a bit. The moodiness worked in the Miss Piggy challenge with the mod black and white striped dress, but this week I wanted to tell her to relax a bit.

Austin's model is becoming forgettable to me. Normally a tall beautiful blonde would be very easy to remember but she somehow fades into the background. I think she is good at what she does and is definitely on her way.

Speaking of blondes... Mondo's model is my favorite this season. She seems to know how to embody what Mondo creates. I loved her effortless walk down the runway in the cantaloupe kaftan.

This challenge's elimination reminded me of the episode Kayne was eliminated in season 3. "Black and White" - the judges said there was not enough white elements in his look. They just wanted a reason to let a contestant go, and they used it as an excuse. The same rule applies here! Obviously Anthony had many items of clothing from the street that he could have used. Why not make the top of his look in that polyester print? Sure, it would have leaned a little bit too on the era of the 70s, but at least he would have completed the challenge in the judges eyes more to the T.

That being said, I think his look was the best he had done all season long!!! I wish he would have done that look for the Gelato challenge so Diane von Furstenberg could have seen his glorious jumpsuit in green tea color! He was really beginning to come into his own. Anthony, please keep making those jumpsuits! I will take 2!

Brian liked the challenge this week...
Kara Janx gives the insider view...
Second City Style calls it a little ho-hum...
Democracy Diva gets right to the complaints...
Karen's pre-season predictions aren't holding up...
Donna loved this one...
And Toyouke finally figured out FauxHeidi's name.

The Baum School of Art is pleased to present a fashion exhibit entitled Frock & Roll: Fashion That Rocks, from February 9th through March 2nd, 2012.

Consisting of high end designer fashions and accessories, the show explores fashion that exists outside the traditional boundaries of daily attire. Curated by fashion designer and Baum School fashion instructor Pamela Ptak, the garments have been selected from a diverse range of designers, some well established in the fashion pantheons of Paris, London and New York and some newly emerging, to express varying perspectives on what defines a garment.

Rather than a purely conventional interpretation of the theme, the show explores the spirit of rock & roll with it’s inherent irreverence, excitement, & attitude.

Additional Project Runway designers featured in the show include Ben Chmura, Marla Duran, Kristin Haskins Simms, Mila Hermanovski, Jay Nicolas Sario, and Pamela Ptak.

New Designs From Andrae Gonzalo

Project Runway Season 2 contestant, Andrae Gonzalo, presents a new collection for Mikael Aghal in New York.

All Photos: Adrianna Favero
Model: Alexandra Aguilera
Hair and Make Up: Clair Marshall

Gonzalo's contributions to the Mikael Aghal line are elegant & glamorous, each having an individual narrative & theatrical sensibility. Gonzalo jokes that, "If all the world's a stage, then you'd better think about what you're wearing before you leave the wings".

Multiple layers of chiffon suggest, "I'm whimsical, but delicately confident." Sumptuously draped matte jersey says, "I'm literally well-armed, beautifully dangerous."

All of them are meant to exude a sense of strength, power, pride & elegance. Despite the classical dressmaking techniques & red carpet appeal, Mikael Aghal promotes wardrobe versatility. Two wearable looks can be had for the price that other labels charge for a gown that is only worn once.
